Wider doorways
A narrow doorway comes out and a wider opening is framed in its place, for a wheelchair or a walker.
Blocking for grab bars
Solid wood blocking goes in between the studs at grab-bar and seat heights, so the bars and a fold-down seat are fixed into wood.
Switches, outlets and lighting
Light switches are lowered, wall outlets are raised and a motion-sensor light is added.
Slip-resistant floors
A level floor with a slip-resistant surface runs from the room into the shower, with no step between them.
Zero-threshold shower and grab bars
The shower floor sits level with the room and drains to a linear drain. A fold-down seat, a hand shower on a slide bar and grab bars go on the walls.
Roll-under sink and D-pull hardware
A sink with open space below for the knees and wrapped pipes, a touchless faucet, and D-pull handles on the cabinet doors.

Can you prepare my walls for grab bars during another renovation?
Yes. While the walls are open, solid wood blocking can go in behind the drywall, so grab bars or a seat can be fixed into it later.
